THE LIONS CLUB OF HASTINGS

LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL MULTIPLE DISTRICT 105, BRITISH ISLES AND IRELAND: USED HEARING EQUIPMENT PROJECT: HIGHLIGHTS OF 2005
Website: www.hastingslions.org.uk under Welfare
4 January. As soon as the man with the big red bag resumes his duties after the New Year we get our first hearing aids donation from Burgess Hill District Lions Club. A nice little haul from Val and Tony Parris, thanks. We are off and racing, as they say!
11 January. Two hundred aids are off to Glyn Vaughan in Cambodia, making our first delivery.
11 January. Fifty-four body aids to our old chum Hugh Thom and our friends in the Philippines.
19 January. Whoops, both the analysers in use at Frankland are “on the blink”. We have a spare, so a smart departure via Parcelforce should be able to help them out. We hope that the Starkey magicians can fix the other two.
24 January. Hugh Thom is desperate for an audiometer. So we hand him a bonus by sending two of Kate Davis’s that we still had in stock. UPS are neither cheap nor sympathetic to our charity plea but they do seem to be reliable.
25 January. Our first consignment of 100 hearing aids to Bolivia is on its way to Diane Bellomy and Ron Davis in La Paz. Barbara Wilson, who has a “Fair Trade Agreement” with businesses in Bolivia and sells the goods in that splendid Sussex city, Brighton and Hove, brought the plight of some children out there to our attention. If they get through we hope to send some more.
28 January. Thanks to Mike at the Conquest Hospital, we are able to find the most suitable pair of hearing aids for Mr Olufemi Ayeni in Nigeria. Readers of the 2004 Highlights will recall that Diana James of the Salisbury Diocesan Association for Deaf & Hard of Hearing People recommended him to us.
5 February. The weekend of the Lions Convention for the South East of England held in Gravesend. Chichester Lions are up in force and bring three boxes of hearing equipment, hooray!
12 February. Having sorted out the Chichester boxes we have identified consignments from as far afield as Burnley, Southend-on-Sea, Ormskirk, Omagh, Southport and Castle Point. There are probably more but they did not identify themselves. Thank you one and all.

14 February. Romance is in the air courtesy of St Valentine and to use a Ken Doddyism, I shall certainly find it a lovely day for cuddling a grandma! As well as that 103 hearing aids are on their way to Dr Hugh Thom and the delicious Ophelia in the Philippines. There’s more; masses of hearing aids are on their way to Frankland gaol for overhaul!

15 February. I take my wife up to the local hospital audiology department for an update on her hearing aid as well as to drop off some 35 checked out hearing aids there. Audiologist Carol Gupwell has an Ecuadorian friend coming soon and needs as many high-powered aids as possible.
