THE LIONS CLUB OF HASTINGS

6 June. One hundred hearing aids and an audiometer are on their way to Namibia via a kind person in Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) in London. Actually it all will end up in Kenya with Stephen Mwereria, complicated!
21 June. Still the hearing aids pour in as a result of the “Yours” article, many with no note to allow us to acknowledge.
27 June. An audiometer and a hundred hearing aids start their journey to Bolivia, via our courier Mary Leighton in Cambridge. Oh what wonderful web we weave, thanks Mary!
26 June. Things are hotting up. At our Lions Club of Hastings annual lunch I receive the big box of hearing aids from Gareth Moore, who has had them collected from Chichester. Also some others that have been with our new secretary Ray for yonks but he forgot; senior momentitis strikes again!
27 June. From out of the shrubbery of Rotherhithe (is there a shrub in Rotherhithe these days?) pops Simeon Afolabi from the Nigerian National Ear Care Centre. He is here for three weeks and has been trying to contact me. Unfortunately because of all the scams we get from his area, my virus and spam filter has blocked him. We are able to retrieve the situation with a hundred hearing aids and an audiometer for him to take back next week.
28 June. I spend most of the day sorting out the pile of aids from Chichester. It must add up to over 2000, so whoopee and thanks to everyone who we cannot acknowledge because there was no address of the sender.
4 July. It may be a big day in the USA but also for us. Eight of eleven packages arrive by Parcel force from Derbyshire County Council, Support Services for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired. They comprise three analysers, 4 auditory trainers and 4 audiometers. We hope the other three arrive tomorrow but what we have is wonderful and will find good homes.
5 July. Praise be, the man with the fork stick bounded up the road with three audiometers from Derbyshire on the end of it! Thanks DCC and Parcel force.
15 July. Another analyser is on its way to Frankland to back up the others and several thousand hearing aids for processing.
15 July. Hugh Thom in the Philippines and the gorgeous Ophelia send us some lovely photos of recipients of our hearing aids. It is always good to get the feedback.
18 July. Fair exchange etc., two long awaited and welcome boxes from Frankland arrive comprising about 700 hearing aids. Now I can get the next consignment to the Philippines off in the next few days.
