THE LIONS CLUB OF HASTINGS

1 April.
The 100 hearing aids, 240 batteries, mould material and syringes are on their way to Zimbabwe, via Mansfield and nurse Dorothy Dhliwayo. I am chuffed!
1 April. Another load of hearing aids arrive from Chichester Lions, via the Lions “underground”, so they need to be sorted.
2 April. Five donated hearing aids arrive from Bicester in Oxfordshire. We have nearly enough to send a package to Frankland for recycling and these are most welcome.
7 April. A double whammy today because I popped in to the Seaford Hearing Centre on my way back from another visit, to be greeted warmly and given a bag of hearing aids.
On arrival home the postman has brought a pair of hearing aids from The Lions Club of Tiverton. They were from the late wife of the last Charter Member in the Club. She was 100 years old, bless her.
15 April. 4.6 kilograms of hearing aids are wending up to Frankland to have their magic applied. Some came from Ophelia in the Philippines and are ones we sent and have been returned as unserviceable.
15 April. As a return gift we are sending 283 hearing aids to Ophelia!
28 April. We return from the Lions clubs Convention in Aberdeen loaded with Scottish germs but also with some hearing aids from Burgess Hill Lions and from anonymous sources. We also received a plaque via our International President to hand over to Frankland Prison with thanks for their efforts on our behalf.
12 May. STOP PRESS Oooh I must tell you all straight away! We have just had an even bigger delivery than the last. Where do they all come from? Well I can tell you just from opening one of the boxes that there are 3360 from Clacton Lions (they counted ‘em!) And a big Jiffy bag from Chester Lions. We’ll keep you in touch as we sort the rest. It might be a week or so. It’s for sure we have enough hearing aids to keep the Sight and Sound Workshop busy for a year.
13 May. Well I said I would tell you so prepare to be amazed! I have sorted and weighed exactly 30kg of naked hearing aids. Apart from the Clacton and Chesters’ magnificent contribution, Hearing Concern have had an appeal, which has resulted in hearing aids coming from as far a field as Truro, Kilmarnock, Plymouth and Aberdeen. I am really overwhelmed at how well we have done, thank you all. Now I shall go and have a lie down!
20 May. From the note with the latest batch of hearing aids from Frankand we see that Soundseekers have received another 60.
30 May. Seventy-nine hearing aids are off to the Sudan via our friend Islah.
30 May. We receive some nice thank you letters and lovely photos from Dorothy Dhliwayo, recently returned from her visit to the Jairos Jiri Homes in Zimbabwe.
9 June. Ophelia Thom is visiting friends in Holland but the rascal did not tell us until the last minute or we would have brought her to England. Never mind we can forgive her anything and as a token we send her an audiometer and about 200 in the ear aids.
22 June. We seem to be having a quiet period. Having said that tomorrow the avalanche. However, we receive two hearing aids from Sandown and Shanklin Lions, as a result of the Nixons, DG Pat and Eric, visiting. Apparently the Club collects spectacles and hearing aids for a charity called Spec Trek and send them once a year but these two were late for the parcel. It is grand to hear what we all do in our own quiet way.
